TP Link Archer VR600 ADSL\VDSL AC1600 Modem\Router - $106.87 Delivered Via Wireless1 eBay with Code ($112.51 W\O Code)

Our ADSL modem recently died, and since then we've been using a working but terrible D-Link modem until we either switched to FTTN NBN and had to get a new modem or found a suitable replacement before we switched that didn't suck at either ADSL or VDSL and didn't cost a stupid amount of money (as most seem to do). It usually goes for about $169 upwards, so getting it for under $110 is a good deal. Usually it's about $150 from Wireless1 on eBay.

This Archer VR600 seems to not totally suck at ADSL or VDSL, so that's nice, has gigabit ethernet, AC1600 wireless, external antenna as well as not looking too over the top.

Based on the specs, this is the v2 model, which has support for Annex B which means it should play nicer with NBN FTTN compared to the v1 model. Also has a Broadcom chipset so if you're on a stupid long line and on ADSL (like we are) then it should play nice with that too. You can also use it on FTTP\HFC as a wireless router if you wanted to, but you lose one of the LAN ports as that will serve as the WAN port.

More info on the TP-Link website.

ADSL Unlimited Broadband: $59/M Bundled (City Rates) - No Contract or Setup Fees (+ $10/M after 6 Months) @ Mate Communicate

There are no real ADSL bargains out there but if you had to choose one, I think this would be the closest in terms of cost, contract and ISP reputation. If you have an active phone line on the Telstra network and need ADSL and phone line rental, don't want to pay any setup fees or be locked into any contracts and are in the metro area, this may interest you.

City Mates ADSL Unlimited Bundle

  • $59 / month (first 6 months then it goes up to $69)
  • Includes line rental and ADSL all on the Telstra network
  • Unlimited local & national calls within Oz
  • $0 setup
  • Unlimited data
  • Free NBN transition (continue month to month contract)

Regional rates are also available at $89/m (+$10 after 6 months) but I believe they are not as competitive as other providers, however no contract and no setup fee may be worth it.

Mate Communicate is a well reviewed provider and is popular on Whirlpool forums.

Download the full adsl CIS here.

Still a sorry sod with no NBN in sight, I recently churned over to Mate after Telstra put my ADSL2+ bundle connection up from $80 to $100 month. For me, the phone and internet service is exactly the same and speeds are on average higher. The churn went through quickly and communication from mate was excellent via SMS and email.

How does this compare with some other ADSL providers offering a similar plan?

Leaptel ADSL Bundle Unlimited Month to Month

  • $69.95/m (On-Net) or $89.95 (Off-Net)
  • Includes phone line
  • Calls charged at standard rates
  • $90 setup fee (Same as churn fee?)
  • Transition fee over to NBN ??

TPG ADSL Home Bundle (On-Net) Unlimited Month to Month

  • $59.99/m (On-Net)
  • Includes phone line
  • Calls charged at standard rates (or add a $10 VOIP add-on allowing unlimited national calls)
  • $0 churn setup fee + $20 Prepayment
  • $99.95 fee for transitioning to NBN Bundle (No lock-in contract)

TPG 0ff-net plan exists at maximum 500GB standalone plan starting at $99.99 / month.

Dodo ADSL Bundle Unlimited Month to Month

  • $69.90/m ($99.90/m Regional)
  • Includes phone line
  • Calls charged at standard rates
  • $29 setup fee
  • Transition fee over to NBN ??

Again, not an overly exciting offer and maybe better suited to the forums but possibly it will help those looking for a reputable ISP with no contract at the lowest cost. Seen a better deal? Post it below!

Cheers.

Sign up for Telstra Broadband ($90/Mth) & Get First Month Credited Back @ JB Hi-Fi (In Store Only)

UPDATE: I have ammended the deal to reflect that, unlike last year's deal, the modem cost is not waived, but is instead baked into the plan as a monthly cost. If you already have a solid MU-MIMO AC/WiFi-5 modem router and will be looking to exit out within 12 months, this deal is probably not for you.

Similar to the previous offer last year, JB HiFi have been running this since November, though the Telstra TV component has been removed. There may or may not be a delivery fee charged for sending out the modem (at last check, that was not the case). I have confirmed that this offer is valid and active with two different Victorian stores.

Sign up in-store at JB HiFi with 100 points of ID and you get:

  • a Telstra casual Unlimited Broadband plan @ $90/month (either ADSL, Cable 50/100 or NBN50 depending on what services your area)
  • AC3150 4x4 MU-MIMO Telstra Smart Modem with 4G backup (billed at $9/month for 24 months and then credited back, meaning you have to pay any remainder off when you terminate your service)
  • unlimited local, national and mobile calls (requires active phone line or NBN service)
  • free standard installation
  • one month credited back to you (apparently the 2nd or 3rd month)

If you don't have a JB HiFi local to you, you can get the same offer via Telstra's sales line, you just won't get that free month of credit. I'm not going to post that as another deal as it's technically a negotiated offer. For those running the numbers, the JB HiFi credit means the modem has been fully paid for after 15 months of service.

For the mods, I've linked the terms of the old deal (though they're technically not valid) as there's no listing of this online; I hope this is OK. I've set the end-date to the end of the year, as it seems this deal isn't voided by plan pricing changes from Telstra.

If you're in an NBN HFC area, you get the added bonus of 100/5 MBit cable while you wait for the network to go live in your area.

Enjoy!

Unmetered Data on Limited Data NBN & ADSL Plans + More @ Aussie Broadband

I found Aussie Broadband COVID-19 response on whirlpool.

We really do live in very interesting times. The following will be emailed to all customers over the next two days regarding what we are doing to help with the COVID-19 pandemic…

You’re probably getting emails like this from all directions, but we just wanted to let you know we’re working hard to keep your internet service running as smoothly as possible in the coming weeks.

Network capacity
Our network is already set up to meet the highest levels of traffic we see every week (usually on Sunday and Monday nights, when lots of people are home), and our team are keeping an eagle eye on things.

We will upgrade as necessary if we see peaks beyond our normal high range, and we believe we are well set-up to cope. Don’t forget that you can keep an eye on our daily bandwidth graphs on our website network centre.

Helping customers
Because it looks like many of us will soon be stuck at home, we are putting these measures in place:

  • Providing unmetered data usage between 6am-6pm for all customers on limited data NBN or ADSL plans
  • Stopping all service suspensions*
  • Enabling any of our few remaining customers on 12/1 speed plans to upgrade if necessary to help them work from home

These measures will be in place by Wednesday 18 March.

Our normal financial hardship services, including payment plans that you can set up online via MyAussie, will continue.

Customer service
As you know, we’re based in Australia. Some of our team are already working from home and we’re prepping for all of us to do the same if necessary, including our customer service call centre team.

Remote working will mean we won’t be able to provide customer support as fast as we normally do. If this does happen, we’ll let you know.

In the meantime, don’t forget that you can also:

  • self-help test and log faults via your MyAussie app or portal
  • find lots of answers in our website Help Centre
  • ask for a call-back when our queues are long

Family matters
The thing that always matters to us the most is family and community, and our value of being good to people. You are part of the Aussie Broadband family, and we want to assure you that we’ll do our level best to help in any way we can over the coming weeks.

Cheers
The Aussie Broadband team

*. ”being good to people” includes our own people – so we do reserve the right to suspend the service of anyone who abuses our team or our network

Draytek VigorNIC 132F ADSL/VDSL PCIe Modem $80.32 + CC Fees + Delivery @ Itsdirect.com.au

PCIe ADSL/VDSL router. Works in NAT mode or Bridge mode. Pfsense also identifies it as a realtek (re0) device.
Has a 2nd WAN port that supports SFP. Comes with low profile and full profile bracket.
Consumes much less power than an external device and boots much faster.

Performance like other drayteks don't seem to be the fastest. Generally a solid product.

Product details can be found here:
https://www.draytek.com.au/products/adsl-vdsl-modem-routers/...

Got it running at home with pfsense. Used this article to set it up and gain access to the web gui interface
https://forum.netgate.com/topic/106404/a-day-with-the-vigorn...

Next cheapest price is $164+ delivery on staticice. Keep in mind the product went EOL in 2018. Shame cause it's a good product and there's not really anything else on the market.

NOTE: The itsdirect.com.au web site is really outdated. Only supports passwords UP TO 8 characters. Looks like it can be easily hacked. Don't reuse passwords in general, but especially their site. Payment processing via credit card is done by St. George payment portal which is smart of them. I beleive "It's Direct" doesn't record any credit card details.

They ended up being very prompt with delivery. My order had an issue related with kapersky blocking the processing. Called them up on Monday, got it delivered by Tuesday. Paid just under $97 after all the cc and delivery fees.

Hope this helps out people who might be interested in this niche product.

PS. I am in no way affiliated with the seller or manufacturer.

Unmetered Data (6am-6pm) on Limited Data nbn & ADSL Plans in Lockdown @ Aussie Broadband

This was introduced early last year but ceased at the end of January after a summer of freedom. It returned again in mid July (maybe earlier?) as winter hit and lockdowns returned.

It’s been great for me as ms_sween64 has been working from home.

If you’re doing it tough:
If you are on a limited data nbn™ or ADSL plan, we will provide you with unmetered data usage between 6am-6pm during lockdowns.
And don’t forget, we have a range of financial hardship options for residential and business customers, including:
Payment plans that can be set up at the touch of a button via the MyAussie app/portal, or via a call to our team
Downgrade to a lower cost plan at any time with no plan change fee
Spend controls and other options
You can also speak to one of our Financial Hardship Officers on 1300 880 905 (or, if you are unable to use the phone, please lodge a ticket via MyAussie).
